This page contains the locations and crafting requirements of the Griffin Witcher Gear found in The Witcher 3.

The Griffin Witcher Gear is the first real set that can be encountered when playing.

Griffin Witcher Gear Diagram Locations

The basic diagrams are all located in The Velen region. Being a complete set of witcher gear it can be upgraded in enhanced, superior and finally mastercrafted versions.

Basic Griffin Witcher Gear

There is a full set of Witcher Weapons and Armor hiding in Velen in the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear. The set contains both a silver and steel sword, as well as medium armor for the chest, gauntlets, boots, and trousers. These pieces of Witcher Gear can also be upgraded once the diagrams for their superior versions are found. The quest to find them can be started at any of the three locations they are found: The lighthouse of Lornruk, the Hindhold watchtower, and the Dragonslayer's Grotto cave.

Basic Griffin Silver Sword

The diagram for the Griffin Silver Sword is located in the abandoned lighthouse of Lornruk, located on the far Northwestern tip of Velen. The drawbridge to the tiny island has been raised, and a level 14 Wyvern guards the lighthouse.

Try to lure it away from the island and take it down with crossbow bolts and use of the Aard sign, then carefully climb down the rocky slope to the shore, then cross to the Quen Place of Power. From here you can dive into the water to find an underwater cave filled with Drowners.

Take them out with the crossbow and swim underneath the island for a way into the building. Climb to the top and enter the main ruined building to find a chest with the diagram, as well as clues pointing to your next destination.

Basic Griffin Steel Sword

The diagram for the Griffin Steel Sword is found in the abandoned watchtower of Hindhold, located just to the East of the Novigrad Border Post, sitting on the edge of the Pontar river. When crossing the marsh and broken bridge to the main entrance, you'll be met with several level 9 Endrega Workers and a few level 11 Endrega Warriors. Clear them out and head through the ruins and up the stairs to the top.

Alternatively, you can look for some scaffolding on the side of the watchtower that will bypass the Endrega. At the top of the watchtower, you'll encounter a Harpy nest, with a horde of level 7 Harpies flying about.

Force them to land with crossbow bolts and destroy the nest, then enter the ruined room on the left to find a corpse and the diagram, as well as yet another note with more clues as to the final resting place of the Witcher.

Basic Griffin Armor Set

The diagrams for the Griffin Armor, Gauntlets, Trousers, and Boots are all located within the Dragonslayer's Grotto, which is found in a cave just to the West of both Reardon Manor and the village of Downwarren.

Upon entering the cave you'll be set upon by several level 7 Wraiths that inhabit the caves. Use the Yrden Sign to lure them into a physical form to defeat them. A side passage on the right holds more treasures, but your main goal lies straight ahead. When you come to a dead end, look for a crack in the wall on the left to destroy with the Aard sign.

Beware the next area, as it is full of flammable poison gas. Use Aard or Igni to disperse it temporarily, and lure the remaining Wraiths back into the corridor to defeat them. The final chamber holds the prize, as well as an intimidating level 14 Ekimmara. This vampiric enemy will try to cloak itself for a sneak attack. Counter this by lighting them up with an Igni, or use of the Devil's Puffball bomb. Defeat it, and the whole armor set is yours for the taking.

Enhanced Griffin Witcher Gear

All diagrams for enhanced griffin gear can be found in the Novingrad-Velen region. It requires Level 18 to use.

Enhanced Griffin Armor

Fast travel to White Eagle Fort or swim west from Oxenfurt Harbor to the area where a friendly troll lives. In the wreckage, you can find a chest holding the diagrams for Enhanced Griffin Armor.

Enhanced Griffin Boots

Ride North from the Inn at the Cross Roads to reach the ruined buildings near the coast.

In the North West corner of the ruins a chest with the diagram for the Enhanced Witcher Boots can be found.

Enhanced Griffin Trousers

To the East of Crow's Perch are some burned ruins between the moat and the road.

Billowing from a section is some white smoke. Using your Witcher Senses you should be able to see a chest in the smoke which will have the Enhanced Griffin Trousers diagram inside.

Enhanced Griffin Gauntlets

Head to Frischlow and go south to the graveyard area.

a level 18 Noorwraith will be guarding the entrance, but if you're quick at dodging you can use the Aard sign to knock down the wall and roll through and get the chest without needing to defeat her.

Enhanced Griffin Silver Sword

South of the Ancient Oak is a small cave at a crossroads.

Go straight to the end and collect the Griffin Silver sword diagram from the chest.

Enhanced Griffin Steel Sword

The last diagram is located at a bandit camp West of Midcamp.

Head through the arch entrance from the road. There are plenty of enemies here around level 7 and you will likely need to defeat many of them before you can access the chest which is just up the stairs to the right.

Superior Griffin Witcher Gear

The Superior Griffin Witcher Gear requires Level 26 to use.

Superior Griffin Silver Sword

Head North East from the Elverum Lighthouse until you reach the coast where there's a cave entrance. 

Head straight to the end of this cave until you reach a large room with a statue in the center. Go straight past it to the end wall and you will find two chests, one of which holds the Superior Griffin Silver Sword Diagram.

Superior Griffin Steel Sword

Slide down the mountain from Ynvar's Fang and follow the road past some houses to the coast.

You'll come across a tall rock alter with a Witcher symbol on it. Behind this is where you can find the chest containing the steel sword diagram.

Superior Griffin Armor

Along the coast at Giant's Toes are a series of rocky arches and enemies.

At the end of these is a small camp and a few chests, one of which contains the complete armor set of diagrams for the Superior Griffin school.

Mastercrafted Griffin Witcher Gear

The Mastercrafted Griffin Witcher Gear requires level 31 to use.

Mastercrafted Silver Sword

Across the lake, East from Fornhala, is a set of small ruins and a monster nest.

Past the first entrance arch is a ruined tower which contains the silver sword diagram chest.

Mastercrafted Steel Sword

Starting at Boxholm make your way down the path to the East.

There may be an elemental guarding the area that you need to kill before jumping up the ledge directly ahead to grab the chest behind the half-destroyed wall.

Mastercrafted Armor

North up the coast from Redgill is a small set of ruins being guarded by a cyclops.

Turn left in the middle of this area and go through the doorway. Then hug left to climb the rocks to the next floor where a place of power and two chests sit.

The box to the left contains the full set of diagrams for the Mastercrafted Griffin armor.

Grandmaster Griffin Witcher Gear

the Grandmaster Griffin Witcher Gear is containted in the Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3. It can only be crafted by the Grandmaster Smith in Beauclair. As with the other schools, there are four pieces of armor to acquire along with two swords.

Grandmaster Gear Part 1

Go into the Fort Ussar Ruins through the arch to the left after defeating the enemies in the area.

Turn right when you're back in the open and under some fallen debris will be a box containing diagrams for the steel sword, gauntlets, and boots in this set.

Grandmaster Gear Part 2

Head into Mont Crane Castle and defeat all the bandits on this first floor before heading left towards the far wall.

Dispell the illusion and continue through the tunnel to a room filled with shelves. Your witcher senses should locate a small button against the center wall which will open a secret passageway.

Head to the end of this passageway and get and read Moreau's journal from the chest. Then head back out and turn right to get the Power Crystal off the desk in this section.

Enemies may appear, so take care of them and then return to where you got Moreau's Journal and put the Power Crystal in the holder. Use Aard on the crystal to open the portal, and step through.

Defeat the elemental guarding the cave and head towards the back to find a diagram for the trousers on the desk, the silver sword on a round table, and the last one on the bookshelf.
